Starting tomorrow, January 19, 2011, I’ll be starting an internship with the Wisconsin Institutes for Discover and Morgridge Institute for Research as a 2d game artist and graphic designer for educational games. Although I’ll be using my design skills throughout a variety of my tasks at this position, it’s an exciting departure from my usual graphic design-exclusive work. I’ve done work on a handful of various games, and have always found the game design and development world extremely exciting and interesting. I’ve taken a few game classes that always left me thirsty for more, I finally get my chance to really dig in.
I see this internship as an opportunity not only for personal advancement in the workplace, but as an adventure in knowledge. I see this as a chance to utilize my passion for one creative field and transfer that passion to a related field, possibly bringing about a whole new passion born of both worlds. I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
I’ve always been a gamer, and have always toyed at the thought of making games. The majority of my close friends are game designers, and some of my favorite graphic designers happen to do game work as well. Michael Heald of Fully Illustrated. His work is fantastic. What I love about what he does is that he gets to do high level graphic design work, but also high level game art via tackling the task of creating game objects and wolds, then building a killer marketing campaign for the game he just did art for! Talk about dream job! Sign me up!
Will this internship turn into that? Who knows, I sure hope so.
